POPULAR sprinter Kingsgate Native could be on the brink of retirement with the outcome of Tuesday’s 5f conditions stakes at Nottingham set to decide his future.

The dual Group 1 winner has not enjoyed the best of times this year and only victory at Nottingham may be enough to persuade trainer Robert Cowell not to call time on a career spanning nine years.

Cowell said of the 11-year-old on Monday: “He’s nearing the end of his career, this will tell us whether to keep going with him for a few more runs or if that’s it.

“We might keep going if he wins, but otherwise retirement beckons, though obviously we’d discuss it fully with [owners] David and Patricia Thompson first.”

Big-race success

Kingsgate Native’s first taste of Group 1 success came in the 2007 Nunthorpe Stakes at York as a maiden, when trained by John Best.

The following June he was successful in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot as a three-year-old and was retired at the end of 2008 to stud.

However, his time as a stallion proved short lived and he was returned to training with Sir Michael Stoute following fertility issues.

Trained by Cowell since 2012, his other big-race wins include two victories in the Group 2 Temple Stakes and a win in the 2009 King George Stakes at Goodwood.

His last success came in a Listed contest at Haydock in May 2015.
