FOUR years after Frankel bowed out of racing as one of the greatest horses ever to grace the turf, the sport has the chance to enjoy his legacy when the first of the brilliant champion’s offspring makes his racing debut at Newbury on Friday.

Frankel was synonymous with firsts, finishing his career unbeaten in 14 starts and in his debut year as a stallion at Khalid Abdullah’s Banstead Manor Stud siring 111 foals. The first of those born, Cunco, is the first to make it to the track.

The colt, trained by John Gosden for the Chilean owners of Don Alberto Stable, begins his career in division two of the Welcome To The Starlight Raceday Maiden Stakes at Newbury.

Former winners of the £10,000 prize include Canford Cliffs, who on his final start finished second to Frankel in a Sussex Stakes face-off that was billed as the Duel On the Downs.

Cunco was born at Coolmore Stud on January 11, 2014 out of the multiple Group-winning Danehill Dancer mare Chrysanthemum. He was unsold at 280,000gns when offered at the Tattersalls October Sales last year.

Cunco: first Frankel foal to be born and the first to race as well

Gosden said: “Cunco is blissfully unaware he is the first Frankel to run but he’s ready for a race. He’s a first foal and quite a petite horse as many are, but he’s been pleasing me in his work. The rain they’ve had hasn’t helped matters but he should run a nice race, although if something is well tuned up in the race they might find him out.”

Despite Frankel’s covering fee of £125,000, the Don Alberto team have been major clients of the stallion and have put him at the heart of a drive to become global players in the racing and bloodstock world.

Since Don Alberto’s owners Carlos Heller Solari and his mother Liliana Solari bought Vinery Farm in Kentucky, which has been renamed Haras Don Alberto, in 2013, they have bred another ten mares to Frankel who will go into training in Australia.

In South America, Don Alberto owns around 300 broodmares and its Chilean stud has stood the Coolmore stallions Mastercraftsman, Henrythenavigator, Holy Roman Emperor, Dylan Thomas and Rock Of Gibraltar during shuttle visits.
