Preview: UAE, Thursday

Meydan

THE unbeaten UAE 1,000 Guineas winner Polar River appears to have scared off the opposition and faces just two rivals in the Group 3 UAE Oaks over 1m1½f on the Meydan dirt on Thursday.

Winner of her three starts by a combined 31 lengths, Doug Watson’s filly is already favourite for the UAE Derby in just over three weeks time.

With the Kentucky Oaks a possible consideration, she will need to win both the remaining UAE Classics to justify such lofty aspirations.

Watson said: “She’s a very exciting filly. The trip in the UAE Oaks and Derby should really suit her and she’s learning with each race.

“We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves but the Kentucky Oaks could be a possibility.”

Mike de Kock’s local debutante Vale Dori could prove the biggest test yet for Watson’s filly. A setback ruled her out of the UAE 1,000 Guineas prep and the big race itself but she won both her dirt outings in her native Argentina, including in Group 1 company.

De Kock said: “She’s very talented but has had problems. We’ve had a clear few weeks with her now but Polar River looks a champion so we’ll learn a lot.”

Rivals return in Balanchine

Seven have been declared for the 1m1f turf feature, the
Group 2 Balanchine Stakes, restricted to fillies and mares, six of whom clashed in the Group 2 Cape Verdi over a mile.

That was won in style by Godolphin’s Very Special, who will bid to emulate De Kock’s Sun Classique (2008), French challenger Cladocera (2015) and former stable companion, Sajjhaa (2013) by winning both races.

Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor said: “She won the Cape Verdi well but now has a penalty so this will be harder but the trip should suit and she’s in great form.”

Other British challengers

Tom Dascombe’s Excilly was second in the Cape Verdi but the Marco Botti-trained Euro Charline looks a stronger challenger for Britain and is one of three mounts on the card for Ryan Moore, who is riding in the UAE for the first time this year.

A Grade 1 winner, she was fourth in last year’s Dubai Turf on her sole local start so the chances are Botti has left a bit to work on with just over three weeks to that big-race target.

Roger Varian’s Battersea last month won a handicap over the same 1m6f turf course and distance as the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy, in which he faces 13 rivals, including the four who chased him home on that occasion.

The third that day was Godolphin’s Famous Kid who meets him on far better terms, and Bin Suroor said: “Conditions suit him well and he’s improved for that comeback. He should run a big race.”
