Report: Newbury, Saturday

Betfair Exchange Chase (Registered as The Game Spirit Chase) (Grade 2) 2m92y, 5yo+

TOP GAMBLE put up a stunning performance to lower the colours of last year’s Champion Chase winner Dodging Bullets, providing Kerry Lee with another high-profile Saturday winner in her first season as a trainer.

The heavily-supported Top Gamble, who was sent off as the 11-10 favourite, won by 10 lengths.

‘Living the dream’

A delighted Kerry Lee said: “You have to respect the champion chaser, but if you are not in it you can’t win it and he wouldn’t have won a fifty grand race standing in his box. It was a thrilling race to watch and Richard [Johnson] knows him so well and gave him a lovely ride.

“I think he might actually really suit Punchestown, as he’s more likely to get his ground and it’s a nice big galloping track. I wouldn’t be mad for the Ryanair, because of trip and ground, but I wouldn’t rule it out,” Lee added, pondering Top Gamble’s next target.

Reflecting on her magnificent season, Lee said: “Mountainous in the Welsh National was our first really big Saturday, but we had already had Grey Gold here at Newbury on Hennessy day. Then Russe Blanc won at Warwick the following month and then today, I’m living the dream.”

How the race unfolded

Andrew Tinkler sent Captain Conan into an early lead with Top Gamble settled nicely in second under Richard Johnson.

Johnson sent Top Gamble into a share of the lead as they headed down the back straight and had seen off the attentions of Captain Conan as they jumped the cross fence and made the approach to the home straight.

Dodging Bullets, who was weak in the market on his long-awaited return to action, appeared to be going nicely under Sam Twiston-Davies but was unable to keep tabs on Top Gamble who maintained a relentless gallop.

Cheltenham reaction

Dodging Bullets drifted in the market for next month’s Champion Chase following this tame return to action and can be backed at 12-1 to retain his title.

Un De Sceaux has been trimmed in the market by many bookmakers and is as short as 4-7 with BoyleSports, while Paddy Power and Betway offer a best price of 8-11.

Top Gamble is not entered in the Champion Chase but is in the Ryanair Chase, for which he is a general 25-1 shot.

‘He wasn’t race fit’

Paul Nicholls said that Dodging Bullets would come on for the run, but would need to if he is to make an impact at the festival.

“He has to make massive improvement between here and Cheltenham. He might well do on better ground but it was still a disappointment. We’ve had a nightmare getting him here,” Nicholls said.

He added: “He’s been going nicely at home but it’s all very well going nice at home, you’ve got to be race fit and he wasn’t.

“He’s going to come on tonnes for the run but undoubtedly he needs to. He’s having a right blow and on that ground they’ve just got to the bottom of him from the back of two-out.

“There’s huge improvement to come but there needs to be.”
