TRAINER Oliver Sherwood on Wednesday expressed his delight with the condition of last year’s Crabbie’s Grand National winner Many Clouds, who will be tasked with defending his crown at Aintree a week on Saturday despite a “slight wobble” after his impressive win at Kelso this month.

Many Clouds was dismounted by Leighton Aspell after last year’s Grand National, having appeared to stagger slightly after the winning line, and Sherwood admitted there was a similar slight wobble at Kelso.

“After Kelso he was a little bit wobbly, just for a short space of time,” he revealed. “But that’s just him. He’s not the first horse to do it. I had a horse called Bear Claw, who won an EBF Final, and he also had to have oxygen.

“I think it shows Many Clouds wears his heart on his sleeve. That’s why he won the National: he is very, very brave.”

Many Clouds beat fellow Grand National hopeful Unioniste by ten lengths in the Premier Chase at Kelso and was cut to a top price of 8-1 (from 12-1) to become the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to win back-to-back Grand Nationals.

‘Good pipe-opener’

Despite the easy-on-the-eye nature of the win, Aspell, who has ridden Many Clouds in all 24 of his races and is going for a National hat-trick having also won in 2014 on Pineau De Re, suggested the horse had a decent workout.

“He needed a good pipe-opener at Kelso,” he said. “I pushed him out from two out and the ground was testing enough. It was only a week earlier the meeting was abandoned because of waterlogging, so it was still enough of a test.”

Many Clouds had run with credit at Aintree and Cheltenham earlier in the season but seemed much sharper at Kelso, where he impressed with his exuberant running style and bold-jumping technique.

“I think Kelso was the first time this season he was 100 per cent fit,” added Sherwood.

Many Clouds leads the way in the market from Silviniaco Conti, who may well need to win the £1 million contest to deliver Paul Nicholls another trainers’ title, with Willie Mullins breathing down his neck.

Silviniaco Conti is a best-priced 12-1, along with The Last Samuri.
