Report: Navan, Sunday

Flyingbolt Novice Chase (Grade 2) 2m1f, 5yo+

WITH just three runners the Flyingbolt was low on numbers but there was no shortage of drama as Sambremont wore down Ttebbob in the final strides to make the most of the fall of stablemate Tell Us More, who came down at the second-last with the race at his mercy.

The Willie Mullins-trained winner was well detached from his rivals turning for home and ridden vigorously by Ruby Walsh but was allowed back into the contest as Tell Us More’s tendency to jump sharply to his left caught up with him as he crumbled on landing.

The initiative was handed to 8-11 favourite Ttebbob, whose name is derived from his owner’s surname spelt backwards, and although he cleared the final fence in front he looked like he was wading through treacle as he tied up, allowing Sambremont to snatch the prize.

Walsh said: “You have to get lucky sometimes. It looked like Tell Us More was going to win. My fella is nothing but tough and he just kept plugging away. It was pretty slow-motion stuff. In fairness to him, though, he landed running and Ttebbob missed it a bit and that gave me a bit of momentum.”

Sambremont, owned by the Shanakiel Racing Syndicate, was cut to 12-1 (from 14) for the National Hunt Chase and 33-1 (from 50) for the RSA Chase by Paddy Power.

The Gigginstown-owned Tell Us More got to his feet following the fall.

SNOW FALCON made race fitness count to provide trainer Noel Meade with a big-race success at his local track, with Paddy Power and BetVictor seeing fit to halve the winner’s odds to 25-1 for the World Hurdle.

Following two morning withdrawals, the Patricia Hunt-owned six-year-old was left to take on Gigginstown pair Lieutenant Colonel and Dedigout, who were both making their first starts of the season.

Lieutenant Colonel led the depleted field through much of the contest and was still in the box seat before Snow Falcon, who showed no ill effects from his fall in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle last time, cleared the last full of running and asserted his authority on the climb to the line.

Last year’s winner Dedigout, previously successful in eight of his 11 races over hurdles, was first to wave the white flag after fading quickly at the second-last hurdle.

Snow Falcon, a general 33-1 chance for the World Hurdle, returned 11-4 and became the second outsider of three in two races to cause a minor upset following 4-1 shot Sambremont’s win in the Flyingbolt Novice Chase.

Meade said: “The biggest problem we have had with Snow Falcon is his jumping. He has had a back problem that we have to keep under control. That has been causing him to jump poorly.

“If he jumps as well as he jumped today then he can go anywhere. He will take his chance in the World Hurdle now. That will be his next step and three miles will be right up his alley. This fella stays and stays and stays. We might even run him in a couple of those nice staying races on the Flat too.”
