Prix La Barka (Grade 2 Hurdle) 2m5½f

WHILE stablemate Un De Sceaux and the Nicky Henderson-trained Simonsig might boast much higher profiles at home, when it comes to this race, Thousand Stars already has an assured place in history.

A five-time winner at Auteuil, Thousand Stars took this event in 2012 and again in 2014, and will be lining up in the Barka for the sixth time despite having missed the trip last season.

“Thousand Stars loves Auteuil and has twice won this race,” said trainer Willie Mullins. “It was always the plan to bring him back and the testing ground will suit. However, at this stage of his career he’d probably prefer a longer trip.”

Un De Sceaux is less of a tearaway these days than when virtually running away twice here in the spring of 2014 and might find this an easier task after twice coming off worse against Sprinter Sacre this spring.

Mullins said: “Un De Sceaux didn’t have that busy a season. He’ll appreciate the soft ground and reverting to hurdles shouldn’t be a problem at a track where he has won a couple of times in the past. He’s going up in trip but he seems to be staying better these days.”

Like the majority of the British- and Irish-trained challengers, Simonsig is reverting to hurdles, having finished third to God’s Own at Punchestown, only his second start following more than two years on the sidelines.

“It has been a very stop-start campaign but it was a great run,” said Henderson. “He’s back over two and a half miles, which is fine as he has won a Neptune. I’d love to see him on good ground but he has won on soft.”

The Group 3 Prix Questarabad (2.45pm BST) pits James Reveley and France’s best four-year-old hurdler, Device, against the Mullins-trained Footpad and the Paul Nicholls-trained Zubayr, who won on debut in the Adonis and bounced back from a disappointing effort in the Triumph Hurdle with a confidence-boosting success at Wincanton in April. Footpad was third in the Triumph and then fell at Aintree.
