VALSEUR LIDO may have been backed into as short as 8-1 from 20-1 for Saturday’s Irish Gold Cup, the highlight of a star-studded card at Leopardstown, but Eddie O’Leary, racing manager for owners Gigginstown Stud, believes the horse would be a shock winner.

Gigginstown are also likely to saddle Road To Riches in Saturday’s contest, and O’Leary is firmly of the belief that last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup third will prove too strong.

“I was very surprised to hear about the money for Valseur Lido. He’s a very good horse in his own right but he’s a fair bit short of the mark required for a race like this. I’d be very surprised if he finished ahead of Road To Riches,” O’Leary said.

‘We’d have won a Thursday Gold Cup’

O’Leary also added that he believes Road To Riches would have won last year’s Gold Cup but for rain on the final day of the Festival.

“Road To Riches has been a super horse for us and he’d have won the Gold Cup if it was run on Thursday last year.

“Unfortunately rain got into the ground and played to the strengths of Coneygree and Djakadam, whereas we’d have preferred much better ground,” O’Leary said.

Odds-on favourite

Road To Riches, who missed an intended engagement in the Lexus Chase over Christmas after a blood test revealed he wasn’t quite right, is a top price of 4-5 for the Irish Gold Cup, with last year’s runner-up Foxrock next in the market at 7-1.

The final field will be announced after this morning’s declaration stage.
