THE GOING at Cheltenham has been changed to good to soft, good in places following the first day of the 2016 Festival.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse had suggested a change was likely when confirming the ground as good to soft, soft in places prior to Tuesday’s opening day, a description most riders felt was accurate.

BHA statement on deaths

There were three equine deaths during Tuesday’s racing – Pont Alexandre (National Hunt Chase), Rezorbi (Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase) and The Govaness (OLBG Mares’ Hurdle).

Jenny Hall, chief veterinary officer for the BHA, said: “The BHA works closely with Cheltenham, and all British racecourses, to ensure the highest possible standards of welfare are in place for all our horses and jockeys.

“Each of the horses injured were attended to promptly and received the highest standard of professional veterinary care.”
