Minding (leading): still in Irish Guineas but could go straight to Epsom

BRILLIANT 1,000 Guineas winner Minding could head straight for the Investec Oaks despite still being among the possible runners for this Sunday’s Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas, trainer Aidan O’Brien indicated on Tuesday.

Minding is a best-priced 4-7 for the Epsom Classic on June 3, her price hardening in the wake of Monday night’s news that second-favourite So Mi Dar would miss the race through lameness.

Ballydoyle, who chased home Minding at Newmarket, is evens favourite for this Sunday’s Classic at the Curragh, for which 17 fillies remained at Tuesday’s forfeit stage, and looks the more likely O’Brien flagbearer, although her trainer would prefer good or quicker ground for her.

‘We might decide to wait for the Oaks’

“It’s not by any means certain that Minding will run,” O’Brien told the Racing Post. “She’s well and we’ll decide in a day or two but we might decide to wait for the Oaks. Ballydoyle came out of Newmarket well and is in good form, but she wants decent ground.”

Reporting on conditions, Paul Hensey, the Curragh’s racing manager, said on Tuesday: “The ground is good to firm and more firm than good in places, so some rain would be welcome.

“We had a couple of showers this afternoon and it might be a similar situation tomorrow. The forecast is for unsettled weather with the possibility of 5mm of rain over Thursday and Friday.”

Second favourite behind Ballydoyle is Qatar Racing’s recent purchase Now Or Never, at 7-2, and she is followed in the betting by Turret Rocks at 9-1 and Besharah – one of three British-trained possibles – at 10-1.

Jet Setting supplemented again

Jet Setting, like she was for the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas in which she finished ninth, has been supplemented for Sunday’s race, this time as a cost of €30,000.

Her trainer Adrian Keatley said on Tuesday: “Jet Setting was unlucky not to have finished closer at Newmarket, where she got a bump and was turned half-sideways. Take Minding out of the race and she was beaten only about five lengths by the runner-up.

“She came out of the race very well and has really thrived. She worked this morning and Shane [Foley] was really pleased with her. The more rain that comes the better it will be for her.”
