Jerry Blevins remembers being around Adam LaRoche’s son Drake while the two were teammates with the Washington Nationals.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Jerry Blevins remembers Drake LaRoche being a quiet presence in the shadow of his father Adam in the Nationals’ clubhouse in 2014. The Mets left-hander said the 14-year old at the center of the storm in the White Sox clubhouse was never a problem and a “great kid,” and he said his thoughts are with Adam LaRoche.

In his first comments since abruptly deciding to retire over a dispute with the White Sox over his son’s time in the clubhouse, LaRoche cited their time with the Nationals as a “privilege I have greatly valued.”

White Sox players are rebelling against vice president Ken Williams, who asked LaRoche to limit Drake’s time in the clubhouse. LaRoche’s comments contradict the statements made by Williams.

“I had to make a decision,” LaRoche said. “Do I choose my teammates and my career? Or do I choose my family? The decision was easy, but in no way was it a reflection of how I feel about my teammates, manager (Robin Ventura), general manager (Rick Hahn) or the club’s owner Jerry Reinsdorf.”

Blevins, who played with LaRoche for one season in Washington, said LaRoche was a great teammate and great friend.

“The game is going to miss him if this is what happens,” Blevins said. “He’s a great person, a great dad. A great teammate. I know pretty much his whole family.”

Blevins said he often saw Drake and Jayson Werth’s son in the clubhouse, but never noticed how much time they spent with the team. He said there were never any issues with the children.

David Wright also said that he admires Adam LaRoche as a player and father, but said he was not familiar enough with the situation in the White Sox clubhouse to comment.

The Mets’ captain said he was part of the process when Terry Collins decided on the team policy for kids in the lockerroom — out an hour before pregame workouts and allowed back in a half an hour after the game — and he feels it is fair.

“We want to be family-oriented, we want to have kids involved in the process, but once it’s time to get to work, it’s time for business and time to get to work,” Wright said. “That’s when everybody from the outside — kids, family, friends, media, even the PR and other people — out of the clubhouse — so we can focus as a team on the game.”

Wright said it has never been an issue for the Mets during his time with the team.

LaRoche is walking away from $13 million over this dispute and the Mets who talked privately about it seemed sympathetic to him and are particularly annoyed that the 14-year old son was brought into the spotlight by the team executive.

“Nobody should be discussing that boy like that,” one player, who is not a father, said. “He’s a kid and it’s not his fault his father is famous. I feel bad for the kid.”

In the White Sox clubhouse, the reaction was louder. Former Cy Young winner Chris Sale was livid with the White Sox executive and blasted him Friday.

Sale said the players “got bold-faced lied to by someone we are supposed to be able to trust.”

The Mets and Wright hope their clearly-stated policy helps the team avoid a similar issue in their clubhouse. Blevins hopes Drake, his dad and their family don’t walk away from the game this way.
