Yankees’ Aroldis Chapman has another ‘excused absence’

TAMPA — Aroldis Chapman was missing from Yankees camp Thursday, his second excused absence this week.

Chapman was absent on Monday, when he said he was home in Miami to tend to what he called “a family matter,” saying through a translator it had nothing to do with Major League Baseball’s investigation into domestic violence allegations stemming from an October incident.

General manager Brian Cashman said Monday the excused absence was one of two such days requested by the pitcher when the Yankees traded for Chapman in late December.

“There was another date also, asked for in advance, and that was today,” Cashman said Thursday morning. “Excused absence for personal reasons. Shortly after we acquired him, they gave us some information, hey, there’s something that he needs to attend to on this particular date. No problem.”

Commissioner Rob Manfred could rule on Chapman’s situation at any time. Most believe Chapman will face some type of suspension.
