The Rangers want to be the Chicago Blackhawks, and to do that, they’ll probably have to beat them.

They couldn’t Wednesday night, falling to the NHL’s modern-day standard of excellence in Joel Quenneville’s Hawks, 5-3, behind a hat trick from rookie forward Artemi Panarin.

The Blackhawks (38-18-5, 81 points) have won three Stanley Cups in the last six seasons and appear poised to challenge again. The Rangers (32-19-6, 70 points) have been among the NHL’s elite for a while as well but are still looking for that championship.

Captain Ryan McDonagh logged heavy minutes and looked sharp for most of his first appearance in five games after sitting out four with a concussion. But after climbing all the way back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the early period, penalties by Viktor Stalberg and Keith Yandle led to Andrew Shaw’s game-tying power play goal at 9:53, Panarin’s second on the man advantage at 17:00, before Panarin hit an empty-netter late.

Henrik Lundqvist made 15 saves. Corey Crawford stopped 31 for the Hawks.

Alain Vigneault’s bunch scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead 2:17 into the third period, capped by two power play goals from Derick Brassard and Dan Boyle at the start of the third off the same double-minor Chicago penalty. Blackhawks center Vincent Hinostroza’s high stick on Rangers center Dominic Moore late in the second period drew blood and set the stage.

The Rangers’ power play had slumped to 2-for-50 through an 18-game stretch through last week’s win in Pittsburgh. But Brassard ripped one top shelf 24 seconds into the third period to give the power play at least one goal in three straight games, and Boyle buried a Kevin Hayes feed at 2:17.

The Rangers’ work rate was high, and Hayes’ third goal in four games narrowed Chicago’s lea to 2-1 heading to the third period. Hayes finished backdoor off a great feed from Oscar Lindberg after Stalberg separated Chicago’ Erik Gustafsson from the puck.

The Rangers outshot Chicago 19-13 through 40 minutes, and Hinostroza’s high-sticking penalty at 19:34 set the stage for the Blueshirts’ big opening to the third.

The Blackhawks led 1-0 at the end of the first period and 2-0 by the 10:05 mark of the second on goals by forwards Andrew Desjardins on even strength (3:30 of the first) and rookie Artemi Panarin on the power play. Desjardins beat Boyle backdoor to dunk a Teuvo Teravainen feed. Panarin sniped through a screen from ex-Ranger Artem Anisimov to capitalize on a questionable holding penalty called on Chris Kreider.

Dan Girardi seemingly had tied the game at one apiece 1:52 into the second period on a slap shot, but the goal was waived off easily upon review because Kreider had interfered with Crawford in the crease. So the Rangers saw Chicago increase its lead to 2-0 before mounting their comeback.

Lundqvist made big saves on Patrick Kane in the first period and Teravainen in the second, and Kevin Klein broke up a Kane breakaway just over five minutes into the third period.
