Henrik Lundqvist turns aside 34 shots as the Rangers earn a shootout win over the Flyers.

PHILADELPHIA – Henrik Lundqvist’s excellence and a Mats Zuccarello shootout finish lifted the Rangers to a 3-2 shootout win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers (24-15-5, 53 points coming in) bounced back from Thursday night’s 3-1 loss in Brooklyn to the Islanders. They have not won consecutive games since before Thanksgiving and are now 1-1-1 against Philly this season.

They coughed up leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Lundqvist made 34 saves and stopped all three Flyers shootout chances.

The Flyers (19-15-8, 46 points coming in) had a four-game winning streak snapp and hold two games in hand on the Blueshirts despite trailing them in a pack in the tight Metropolitan Division.

A Flyers tying goal in the third felt inevitable even though the Rangers held a 2-1 lead. Philly agitator Wayne Simmonds was the one to send the game to overtime with a power play dunk off assists from Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux.

Snake-bitten left wing Chris Kreider scored a powerful go-ahead goal off slick assists from linemates Rick Nash and Derek Stepan at 4:49 of the second period. The familiar trio from past seasons was reunited, and the Blueshirts held a 2-1 lead going into the third.

The barely held that lead, though. The Rangers put only four shots on Flyers goalie Steve Mason in the second period. Despite smothering the Flyers to two shots in the first 10 minutes, the Rangers had to kill two penalties and bail defenseman Dan Boyle out of three critical errors.

McDonagh blocked a Wayne Simmonds shot 5:48 in after Claude Giroux’s takeaway from Boyle. Boyle committed a critical misread after coming out of the penalty box, requiring a huge Lundqvist save on Jake Voracek to bail him out. Then Lundqvist denied Flyers D-man Shane Gostisbehere on a breakaway at 18:52 after a glaring Boyle giveaway in the neutral zone.

Boyle had been turning his best stretch the past month prior to Saturday’s struggles.

J.T. Miller evened the score at one apiece entering first intermission by ripping a power play goal top shelf far side 16:08 in. Miller’s ninth goal of the year, and first in seven games, pushed his team-high road point total to 15 on the season.

He was back on the power play after being pulled off of it in favor of AHL call-up Jayson Megna and playing just 11:52 in Thursday night’s 3-1 loss to the Islanders in Brooklyn, decisions that took one of the Rangers’ best playmakers out of the equation for much of that defeat.

Captain Ryan McDonagh sprung Miller with a stretch pass for the primary assist, while Henrik Lundqvist received his second assist of the season on the secondary helper.

Miller’s goal bailed the Rangers out of a tough start. They outshot the Flyers, 16-12, in the first period, but Philadelphia looked faster early and took a 1-0 lead at 3:58 on Brayden Schenn’s dunk from the doorstep off assists from Sean Couturier and Michael Raffl.

Defenseman Dan Girardi (hand) returned to replace Dylan McIlrath. Oscar Lindberg played in place of Jayson Megna. Defenseman Kevin Klein injured his right hand on a blocked shot in the third period and went to the locker room but returned.

HEY, HAGS!

Carl Hagelin is a Pittsburgh Penguin. The Pens acquired the former Blueshirt speedster from the Ducks early Saturday morning in a trade sending defenseman Adam Clendening and forward David Perron to Anaheim. The Rangers have yet to play the Penguins, so Hagelin will have four chances to ruin the Blueshirts’ playoff chase this spring. Ranger GM Jeff Gorton already unloaded forward Emerson Etem in a trade – the only NHL-ready player he’d acquired in last summer’s trade of Hagelin for cap reasons to Anaheim. It adds insult to injury that an unsuccessful trade results with Hagelin in the Rangers’ own division.
