Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella is being checked out at hospital after nasty practice fall.

Take it easy, Torts.

Ex-Rangers coach John Tortorella injured his back in a collision with Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rene Bourque in an outdoor practice on Friday and had to be transported to the hospital for further examination, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Tortorella reportedly left practice under his own power after taking a nasty fall, but Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson told the Dispatch that Tortorella’s back “locked up” shortly after he left the ice.

Tortorella later climbed into an ambulance and was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital. It was unclear if he would make the trip to Boston for a game against the Bruins on Saturday.

“He’s stubborn but he needs to go get checked out,” Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen told the Dispatch. “His health is the most important thing.”

A team spokesman said Tortorella was “banged up pretty good, but he’ll be fine.”

Bourque told the Dispatch he “hit a rut” in the ice before colliding with Tortorella and said it “happened so fast” he didn’t even know he had collided with his coach.

Reporter Shawn Mitchell wrote that “Bourque was skating with speed up the left wing during a drill and clipped Tortorella, who was standing along the boards with his head turned. Bourque clipped the coach, sending him twisting onto the ice. Tortorella landed on his backside and remained on the ice for several minutes as medical staff attended to him.”

“I felt so bad for John and for Borkie,” Jackets captain Nick Foligno said. “Nobody wants to see anybody get hurt. But the funny thing about Torts is that he’s pretty tough. I think he’s a lot tougher than all of us. So when you see him down like that, you know he’s pretty hurt.”
