MANY CLOUDS will carry top weight of 11st 10lb when the nine-year-old attempts to become the first back-to-back winner of the Crabbie’s Grand National since Red Rum in 1974.

The weights, unveiled at a ceremony at London’s Sky Garden, revealed Many Clouds has an extra pound to carry compared to 12 months ago when he won by a length and three quarters under Leighton Aspell. His mark of 165 is up 5lb on last year.

Last year’s runner-up Saint Are is not guaranteed a place in this year’s field, although should he get in he will carry 1lb less off 10st 5lb. The same also applies to the fourth, Alvarado, who is on 10st 2lb.

The 2014 winner Pineau De Re is being readied for another tilt at the race and is 12lb lower than last year when he finished 12th. He is back to a mark of 143, which he won the race off, but has only 10st 2lb and is 68th in the list.

Timico Gold Cup contender Don Poli is 1lb lower than Many Clouds on 11st 9lb, with Silviniaco Conti next on 11st 8lb and recent Irish Gold Cup winner Carlingford Lough assigned 11st 7lb.

An early mover following the release of the weights, compiled by BHA chief handicapper Phil Smith, was the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Holywell, who has been halved in price with Paddy Power to 16-1 joint second-favourite.

The nine-year-old, who has not competed in the race before, has 10st 12lb on a mark of 153, a pound lower than his official rating.

Previous stars given chance to find form

Former Gold Cup winners Lord Windermere and Long Run have been given a chance by Smith should they recapture previous form. Long Run, a faller in the race last season off 11st 9lb is more than a stone lower on 10st 8lb. Lord Windermere was pulled up on his first Grand National attempt in 2015, and having had 11st 9lb that day, is now 8lb lower.

Houblon Des Obeaux, a convincing winner of the Denman Chase at Newbury last weekend, has been hit hard for that success and is off 11st 5lb on a mark of 160, a stone higher than he was for his Newbury romp.

This year’s race takes place on Saturday, April 9, with the three-day meeting kicking off on Thursday, April 7.
