Report: Japan, Sunday
Nakayama: Nakayama Kinen (Grade 2) 1m1f, turf, 4yo+

LAST year’s dual classic winner Duramente (Noriyuki Hori/Mirco Demuro), returned to the track after a long-term injury in fine style on Sunday when landing the Grade 2 Nakayama Kinen.

Duramente’s reappearance attracted a massive crowd to Nakayama, with the four-year-old receiving warm applause when entering the paddock.

Demuro made an eyecatching move on the outside of the field to lead the field turning into the straight and his mount kept on willingly in the closing stages to deny the fast-finishing Ambitious by a neck, with Real Steel half a length back in third.

Demuro said: “He was excited because this was his first race after a long spell on the sidelines but he was fast out the stalls and I gained a good position.

“When I drove him to the front, he sort of idled but his class got him through. He is so good that he could win anywhere – it would be great to contest some of the top races in the world with him.”

The third, Real Steel, is set to head to Meydan to contest the Dubai Turf, with his rider Yuichi Fukunaga, reporting: “I’m sure he will come on plenty for this run as he was slightly ring rusty today.”
