THE 2011 Gold Cup winner Long Run will likely miss the Cheltenham Festival after suffering a “very minor issue with a foot”, but owner Robert Waley-Cohen is confident that we will still see the 11-year-old this season.

Long Run had been an intended runner in the St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase on the final day of the meeting, but a training setback means that connections will run out of time to get him qualified.

Robert Waley-Cohen said: “We need two runs by March 2, which probably isn’t going to happen now, but we hope to get him out by the end of February or early in March.”

Long Run hasn’t run since finishing tailed off in the Grand Steeple-Chase De Paris at Auteuil in May 2014, but he had finished third to Boston Bob in the Grade 1 Bibby Financial Services Ireland Punchestown Gold Cup on his previous start and could be a formidable force in the hunter chase ranks if retaining much of his ability.

Punchestown option

Hunter chases are still on the agenda for Long Run, with an event at the Punchestown festival – the Racing Post Champion Hunter Chase – nominated as a potential target for the former Gold Cup winner by Waley-Cohen.

Long Run will also receive an entry in the Crabbie’s Grand National, a race in which he fell in 2014, but Waley-Cohen conceded that “he’d have to run very well on his comeback” to take up such a lofty entry.
