RICHARD FAHEY’S Alben Star regained his Sprint crown under a fine ride from David Nolan in a breakneck dash.

Winner of the race in 2014, the eight-year-old demonstrated a taking turn of foot in the straight to quicken off a strong pace and power to a two-and-a-quarter length victory over Lancelot Du Lac.

Nolan said: “We’ve aimed him at this race for some time. This is the sort of race where they go quick and I let him find his feet. I got a good draw as well.”

How the race developed

Sitting on the rail off a fast pace set by Bosham, Alben Star travelled well for Nolan though it appeared Lancelot Du Lac would take some catching after taking up the running on the turn to the home straight.

Produced to challenge inside the final furlong, Alben Star found plenty for pressure in the closing stages to go clear, with Lancelot Du Lac keeping on for second and favourite Goken one-paced in third.

With £93,375 going to the winning connections, Alben Star’s career earnings now total upwards of £310,000 – with part-owner Mick Scaife delighted to celebrate another big prize on Good Friday.

Scaife said: “He hasn’t got that many miles on the clock considering he is eight as he has had a few injuries so he arrived here fresh and well. The team have done a great job with him. He’s a grand horse.”
