GOLD-FUN will bid to become the first Hong Kong-trained horse to notch a victory in France when he lines up in Sunday’s Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville.

The seven-year-old was beaten a quarter of a length into second by Twilight Son in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and trainer Richard Gibson is happy with the gelding’s progress since then.

Gold-Fun has been stabled with Robert Cowell in Newmarket, where Gibson’s instructions have been carried out.

“The team have done a great job looking after him,” said Gibson. “Post-Ascot he had a ten-day break and then he’s been in training at Rob’s for six weeks.

“Rob has a whole multitude of Group race sprinters in his barn now, he’s a specialist sprint trainer, and after being there the past few weeks we’re happy with Gold-Fun’s condition.”

Soumillon in familiar surroundings

Gold-Fun, four times a runner-up at international Group 1 level and a former champion miler in Hong Kong, will once again be ridden by Christophe Soumillon and will travel to France on Saturday.

“The horse will arrive at Deauville the day before the race and weather conditions are expected to be good, so we’re expecting a good track,” said Gibson.

“Christophe Soumillon will be playing at home for once aboard Gold-Fun, so we’ll be hoping he can give us some home jockey advantage.

“I’ve had a look at the opposition and it’s a tough European Group 1 sprint. These aren’t easy races to win and it’s likely we’ll have quite a big field, so draw is going to come into play as well.”
