THERE were no queues at the bar at Leicester on Monday night where the attendance was a fraction of what the course would normally expect for an early summer evening fixture, as the meeting coincided with Leicester City Football Club’s champions parade.

While the track’s efforts to persuade organisers of the open-top bus parade to pay a visit to the track was unsuccessful, a crowd in the region of 100,000 took their place at nearby Victoria Park to celebrate the club’s impossible Premier League success, leaving the racecourse as something of a ghost town.

“It’s just one of those things, there is nothing we can do and we come second best tonight. Good luck to them,” said clerk of the course Jimmy Stevenson before the first race.

With the main route through Leicester closed from lunchtime, inevitably traffic around the city was laboured, although Stevenson had not heard of any major issues with those participating at the meeting.

“I’ve not heard of anyone having transport issues,” he added. “I’ve warned them all and used the Weatherbys system which is very good as well as the press. It’s a small world with the internet now as well. I told everyone to give themselves at least another hour. It’s been on our website for a week so hopefully everyone knows.”

Regarding attendance, Stevenson said: “The impact is going to be big. Not just because of the parade but because of the impact on transport. They finish at 9pm and we finish at 8.40pm.

“We’d get about 1,200 for an average evening meeting. I wouldn’t like to guess where we’ll end up at but we’re not going to be bursting.”

Trainer Brian McMahon, who was at the track in good time, said: “It’s no worse than any Friday night traffic. It’s not like Manchester United where you’d get a lot of outsiders coming in and I’ve not found it that much different. It will affect the attendance but it’s been well documented and was in the Racing Post this morning.”

Racing fan Keith Moakes made the journey from Nottinghamshire and said the traffic had put an extra hour on his journey. He added: “It took me about an hour from the motorway – it was bumper to bumper – it’s only four miles but everyone was going to see the champions.”
