Report: Salisbury, Friday

EBF Stallions Stonehenge Stakes (Listed), 1m, 2yo only

FRANNY NORTON gave a masterclass from the front on board Montataire to deliver the colt to a fourth victory in his last five starts, as Frankel’s son Cunco faded into fourth.

After winning his maiden at the third attempt, the Mark Johnston-trained son of Cape Cross has been working his way impressively up the handicap and finished second behind Bear Valley in a nursery at Goodwood.

However, with the aid of a superb ride from Norton, Montataire stepped up to a mile to continue his rapid progress with a victory in this Listed race at Salisbury at odds of 7-1.

Montataire holds Group 2 entries for the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury in September.

It was a disappointing effort from Cunco, who in a first time hood finished fourth on his fourth start.

After making a promising start to his career when he became the first of the Frankel offspring to get off the mark at Newbury in May, Cunco finished a promising third behind Churchill at Royal Ascot, however he has failed to build on those initial efforts
