Charlie Johnston, son of trainer Mark Johnston, has issued a positive bulletin regarding Lumiere‘s 1,000 Guineas prospects, commenting that ‘anything other than first place will be disappointing’.

Lumiere created an instant impression when storming to a six-length maiden win at the Newmarket July Meeting and she then performed with credit when fast-tracked to Group company in the Pinsent Masons Lowther Stakes at York, finishing second to Besharah.

She reversed the form on her only subsequent start in the Group 1 Connolly’s Red Mills Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, showing a good attitude to beat Illuminate by half a length, and is no bigger than 6-1 for the first fillies’ Classic.

‘Full steam ahead’

“Subject to confirmation with John Ferguson, we plan to send Lumiere to the 1,000 Guineas on the back of a racecourse gallop rather than a run,” Charlie Johnston revealed.

He added: “It’s full steam ahead for Newmarket and we’re looking forward to it. Anything other than first place will be disappointing.

“The pressure is on and hopefully Lumiere will deliver.”

Another possible

The Johnston team also have another possible in the shape of Fireglow, who won three times as a juvenile and signed off for the season with a four-length win over the Guineas course and distance.

“Fireglow is in really good form too,” Johnston said. “They’ve been working together, but at present we’re undecided whether to go for the Guineas with Fireglow or send her for an Oaks trial.”

“She’s a dual Listed winner and we’re hopeful about her prospects,” he added.
