Knicks manage win over Pistons without Kristaps Porzingis

Losing to the Knicks is one thing. But getting blown out by the struggling team is grounds for setting off Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy.

“We should all be disappointed, it was ridiculous,” Van Gundy said Saturday after the Knicks trounced the Pistons, 102-89, at the Garden. “We were just terrible. We didn’t bring any energy to the game. We didn’t play well at either end. It was an embarrassing performance.”

And here we thought the Knicks just played well.

Robin Lopez and Carmelo Anthony lead the Knicks in scoring on Saturday night as they finally beat a team with a winning record for the first time since Jan. 12.

Carmelo Anthony was all smiles after scoring 24 points with 10 rebounds and six assists, leading New York (26-38) to its first victory over an opponent with a winning record since Jan. 12. It also snapped a three-game losing streak but did not change the Knicks’ position of 13th in the Eastern Conference.

Arron Afflalo and Robin Lopez dropped 20 and 21 points, respectively. The Pistons (31-31) shot just 39%, with point guard Reggie Jackson missing 14 of his 17 attempts.

The highlight of the night was a crossover from Afflalo that sent Detroit guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope sprawling to the court.

“They dominated us,” Van Gundy said. “We couldn’t play Arron Afflalo and Carmelo Anthony. We couldn’t play against those two guys. And Robin Lopez always plays well against Andre Drummond. They dominated us. Our starters on the perimeter were obviously horrendous.”

There was a different tone in the Knicks locker room. “I thought we brought it on both ends,” Anthony said. “We had that energy and focus from (a close loss against the Celtics on Friday night) and carried it into this game. I thought guys responded well and played well.”
