AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Losing because of one of their ugliest starts of the season probably would have been easier to take than going down like this for the Knicks.

Derek Fisher’s team overcame a complete no-show at both ends in the first half to storm back to take a brief lead in the fourth quarter, only to drop a crusher, 111-105, to the No. 8 Pistons at the Palace.

The Knicks woke up and furiously slashed what had been a 27-point deficit in the first half down to seven by the end of the third quarter, and Arron Afflalo drew them within five with a technical free throw play barely four minutes into the fourth.

Langston Galloway registered 12 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, including a left-side three-pointer for an 89-88 game with 5:10 remaining and then a straightaway trey for a 95-95 tie with 2:45 to go.

Robin Lopez, who had season-highs with 26 points and 16 rebounds, finally gave the Knicks their first lead with a put-back 30 seconds later. But Anthony Tolliver drained a three and Reggie Jackson (21 points) buried two more triples in the final two minutes and three game-sealing free throws in the closing seconds while the crowd chanted his first name like they used to at Yankee Stadium.

Carmelo Anthony scored 19 points – albeit none in the fourth quarter — and Afflalo pumped in 19 of his 24 in the second half, but the Knicks (23-29) ultimately lost for the seventh time in eight games to fall a season-worst six games under .500.

All-Star big man Andre Drummond had 17 points and 13 rebounds and rookie Stanley Johnson scored 22 for the Pistons, who moved into a tie with Indiana for the seventh and eighth playoff spots in the Eastern Conference – 4 ½ games ahead of the Knicks.

Point guard Jose Calderon started after missing four games with a groin injury but contributed very little – zero points and three assists in 13 minutes – while Kristaps Porzingis finished with a quiet five points on 2-for-9 shooting.

The Knicks won the lone previous meeting with the Pistons this season, a solid 108-06 win at the Garden on Dec. 29. Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy was thinking more about that game than the Knicks’ recent slide while talking to reporters before the game. Jeff’s brother also shot down Fisher’s assertion from earlier this week that the Knicks are “a developing team” more concerned with “the process” than the playoffs.

“They beat the crap out of us up there, that’s what we’ve seen of them,” Van Gundy said. “I think they’re a good team, they’re a veteran team. They’ve got Porzingis To me, it’s a smart veteran team around a really talented young guy.

“I laugh at it a bit when I see them referred to as a young, developing team. I wasn’t aware that Robin Lopez, Carmelo Anthony, Jose Calderon and Arron Afflalo were that young. I read that and said, ‘wow, OK.'”

Still, with Anthony, Porzingis and Anthony all missing recent games with injuries, the Knicks have hit a major tailspin since evening their record at 22-22 on Jan. 20.

The Pistons netted the first nine points of the game on three straight three-pointers. The Knicks shot 27.9 percent from the floor and trailed by as many as 27 a few times in the second quarter.

To sum up the half, after a made free throw with four seconds remaining before halftime, Brandon Jennings got behind the Knicks’ defense for an uncontested layup en route to a 60-36 rout at intermission.

“We’re an inconsistent team at this moment, and that’s kind of part of getting beyond being inconsistent,” Fisher said before the game. “I think a lot of teams in our league are facing similar circumstances with schedule, injuries, ups and downs. It seems like everybody in the Eastern Conference is 20-something and 20-something and that’s just the way it is right now.

“But if we can get healthy and build some momentum…we’re a few games from being, I guess, in the hunt, but we just have to focus on where we are right now.”
