MANY CLOUDS will be given one more start, at Kelso on March 5, before he bids to land back-to-back runnings of the Crabbie’s Grand National at Aintree in April.

The nine-year-old returned to action when sixth behind Cue Card in October’s Grade 2 bet365 Charlie Hall Chase, before running second to Don Poli in the Listed Betfred Lotto Chase at Aintree.

He then further advertised his well being with a fine run behind Smad Place in the Grade 2 BetBright Trial Chase and trainer Oliver Sherwood believes a trip to Kelso will ensure Many Clouds is fit for his return to Aintree.

Speaking to the Racing & Football Outlook, Sherwood said: “He badly needed his first run back at Wetherby this term, which we expected.

“He then ran a huge race against Don Poli when second in the Listed chase at Aintree in December giving 5lb to the winner, which was a terrific effort.

“I gave him a short break and brought him back at Cheltenham on Trials Day when he ran another cracking race to be second behind Smad Place, again giving weight to the winner.

“He has come back in fighting form and we’re now looking to Kelso on March 5, which fits in perfectly between now and Aintree.”

Hoping for luck

Sherwood admits Many Clouds will need luck if he is to create history in the Aintree showpiece, adding: “We just have to hope he gets there in one piece and then gets the rub of the green on the day.

“I realised watching last year’s race you need so much luck – I hope we didn’t use up all of ours last year!”

Listen out for The Organist

Sherwood also has high hopes for The Organist, a winner of two of her three novice hurdle outings so far this season.

“She won on her hurdling debut at Huntingdon in November and then followed up at Fontwell,” said Sherwood.

“I thought she had a great chance when we took her to Leicester for a 2m novice hurdle last month but she was no match for Tara Flow and I partly blame myself as I dropped her a half-mile in trip and she clearly appreciates further.

“She could go for a 3m Listed race at Doncaster this month and is still one to follow back over a more suitable trip.”

Do not miss this week’s Racing & Football Outlook for more from Oliver Sherwood on Many Clouds and the rest of his string
