Paul Carberry is confident the Irish can enjoy a bumper Festival

PAUL CARBERRY will not be among the winners at this year’s festival due to injury but he believes his compatriots can land a first ever BetBright Prestbury Cup.

The 42-year-old, who misses this year’s festival due to a fractured left leg, is the fifth most successful jockey at the festival among current riders with 14 victories to his name and he believes Ireland can have their most successful ever Cheltenham.

Ireland ran Great Britain as close as possible 12 months ago, the home side claiming prize 13-12 and Carberry believes the strength of the Irish challenge outside of favourites such as Min, Douvan and Annie Power could tilt the balance in their favour this time around.

Speaking in the Racing Post’s Monday Jury, Carberry said: “There won’t be much in it but Ireland has plenty of strength in depth this year and might just shade it.”

Squouateur improving

Selecting one horse from the handicaps to carry the Irish challenge, Carberry added: “I haven’t gone into them in much detail but I think Squouateur, whom Gordon Elliott trains for JP McManus, is an improving horse.

“He has won his last two races and is in the Coral, the County and the Martin Pipe and should go well whichever race he runs in.”
