Sky Bet Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle (Grade 2)

ANY doubts about Min’s place at the top of the market for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle were quickly dispelled as the Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old won exactly like a 1-7 favourite should, creaming the opposition having led for most of the race. The Gigginstown pair of Attribution and Ball D’Arc followed him home.

Sky Bet cut Min into 7-4 (from 5-2) for the Supreme Novices’, while Paddy Power now go 13-8.

The winner is bidding to follow in the footsteps of Vautour and Douvan by winning this before going on to victory at Cheltenham, and he was arguably more impressive here than either of those two were when they landed the Grade 2.

The opposition might not have been as strong, but Min was superb in the way he travelled and jumped. Initially sat in behind early leader Tongie, so well was the Rich Ricci-owned gelding travelling that Ruby Walsh had to take it up as early as the third. It was Min’s hurdling that was most notable – like Vautour and Douvan he is very slick at his obstacles and has a lovely action.

Having taken a tug throughout, there was the slight concern he had pulled too hard as the Gigginstown pair closed rounding the home turn, but they were quickly left for dead as Walsh let out some rein and Min won by nine and a half lengths with plenty in the tank.

Walsh was happy to compare the winner with his two aforementioned stablemates. “He’s like them in that he’s raw and immature. He’s got plenty to do but he’s got a lot of natural ability. He was always taking a fair grip and quickened up really impressively going to the last,” he said.

It will be interesting to see what Mullins does now. Last year after Douvan won this he went straight to the festival, while in 2014 Vautour took in the Deloitte at Leopardstown before Cheltenham. That would be the next obvious target for Min were he to have another run before March.
