IDAHO is as short as 6-4 (from 4) with the sponsors for the Ladbrokes St Leger after the Irish Derby runner-up finally got his head in front to land recognised Leger trial the Great Voltigeur in good style under Seamie Heffernan.

As well as finishing second to Harzand at the Curragh, Idaho finished third to the same horse in the Derby at Epsom at the beginning of June and was the clear form choice going into the Great Voltigeur.

He was given a confident ride by Heffernan, who settled him in the last pair as stablemate Housesofparliament set the pace under Jamie Spencer.

As Spencer set sail for home, opening up a lead on his rivals, Idaho started to move through the gears, although his acceleration was by no means instant.

He eventually found fifth gear heading to the final furlong, racing past his stablemate and into a one and three-quarter length lead at the line.

Housesofparliament held on bravely for second, with Across The Stars back in third.

“He had solid form and we expected him to take all the beating,” said Heffernan. “He’s improving from run to run and won well today. The way Aidan trains them, they keep improving and there is a high chance he will improve again for a step up in trip.”

Both the winner and runner-up could head to Doncaster in September for the Leger, according to winning trainer Aidan O’Brien, who said: “We were very happy with him. He had a tough race in the Irish Derby and had a good break. He relaxed lovely and you’d have to be very happy.

“Jamie said his horse stayed very well and Seamie was very happy with his too. I think he [Idaho] might go up to a mile and six but I’m not sure you’d go much further than that. He travels very well and might come back to a mile and a half and a mile and a quarter as a four-year-old.”
