BARRY GERAGHTY on Monday confirmed he was appealing against the controversial 30-day suspension he received at Limerick on Sunday.

Geraghty was visibly angry and shocked to receive the punishment following his ride on runner-up Noble Emperor, owned by JP McManus, in a 2m handicap hurdle, in which he and five other riders were in the dock for allowing the Barry Cash-ridden winner Velocity Boy too much rope.

While the inquiry into Robbie Colgan’s ride on Definite Earl could not be undertaken as the rider had left the track, Geraghty was the only one of five jockeys to receive a ban.

The 36-year-old will miss the Punchestown festival, with his ban due to begin on April 17, unless his appeal is upheld, while Noble Emperor’s trainer Tony Martin received a €3,000 fine and the horse was suspended for 60 days. Martin will also be appealing, according to McManus’s racing manager Frank Berry.

“I will be appealing,” said Geraghty, who is retained by McManus, in a short statement.

Acting under rule 212, which governs running and riding, the stewards found Geraghty had failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing on Noble Emperor.
