FESTIVAL clues for the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase appear likely to emerge at Ascot on January 23 with the top three in the ante-post market for the Cheltenham Festival showpiece – Un De Sceaux, Sprinter Sacre and Sire De Grugy – entered in the Grade 1 Sodexo Clarence House Chase.

The £125,000 2m1f contest has attracted eight entries in all with Ireland’s champion trainer Willie Mullins, who just 24 hours ago raised the possibility of a serious tilt at the British title, also represented with Felix Yonger.

Un De Sceaux, who is a best price 7-4 shot with Ladbrokes and Coral to land Champion Chase glory, suffered a surprise defeat when falling two out in the Grade 1 Paddy Power “So Quick, So Easy iPhone App” Chase at Leopardstown last month, and Mullins is looking to run his Racing Post Arkle winner again before heading to Cheltenham in March.

Surprisingly, Mullins will be bidding for his first success in this Grade 1 event, having yet to win the race in its 25-year history.

Past winners back for more

Sprinter Sacre and Sire De Grugy enjoyed a memorable ding-dong battle in the Grade 2 williamhill.com Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton over Christmas and the pair could renew rivalry in a race Sprinter Sacre won in 2013 and Sire De Grugy landed in 2014.

The Nicky Henderson-trained 2013 Champion Chase hero is a general 7-2 shot to regain his crown in March, while Sire De Grugy is a best-price 9-1 with the race sponsors.

Other notable entries for the Clarence House Chase include Kempton third and Grade 1 winner Vibrato Valtat and Paddy Power “So Quick, So Easy iPhone App” Chase second Simply Ned.

The eight entries are completed by the talented, yet luckless with injury, three-time Grade 1 winner Captain Conan and Gary Moore’s lightly-raced chaser Traffic Fluide.

Clarence House betting

Paddy Power make Un De Sceaux evens to land a fourth Grade 1 victory, while omitting Sprinter Sacre from their market as the firm don’t believe he will contest the Ascot highlight in January.

Paddy Power said: “We’ve omitted Sprinter Sacre from the betting as we don’t think he’ll run, but it still looks an absolute cracker with young pretender Un De Sceaux taking on wily old pro Sire De Grugy.”

Paddy Power: Evens Un De Sceaux, 6-4 Sire De Grugy, 5 Vibrato Valtat, 6 Felix Yonger, 7 Simply Ned, 16 Captain Conan, Traffic Fluide
