TRAINER Kiaran McLaughlin follows a tried-and-tested path on Saturday when he unleashes Kentucky Derby favourite Mohaymen (Junior Alvarado) for his three-year-old debut in the Holy Bull.

In each of the last two years, McLaughlin has habitually used the $350,000 contest as a starting point for his top Classic prospects.

Cairo Prince, who won the Holy Bull in 2014, was subsequently derailed by injury but last year’s runner-up Frosted went on to become a major player in the Classic division, winning the Wood Memorial before finishing runner-up to American Pharoah in the Belmont Stakes.

Frosted is now in Dubai being readied for a Meydan debut next week ahead of the Dubai World Cup but Mohaymen – a grey son of Tapit who carries the colours of Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell team – has stayed in Florida for the winter.

A 16-1 chance for the Kentucky Derby with Ladbrokes, he is bidding to extend his unbeaten sequence to four in the Holy Bull, having followed a debut success at Belmont last September with a pair of Grade 2 victories in the Nashua and the Remsen.

“It’s very exciting to have a horse in this position,” said former UAE champion trainer McLaughlin. “Obviously, we’ve had some good three-year-olds in the past but never one that’s three-for-three as a two-year-old and one of the favourites from the start of the spring races.

“He’s pretty seasoned for only starting three times,” added McLaughlin. “He’s training great and done everything right. He works well every time and comes back, and doesn’t blow out a match.”

Mohaymen’s five rivals in the Holy Bull are headed by top-weight Greenpointcrusader (Dominick Schettino/John Velazquez), who won the Grade 1 Champagne – New York’s most prestigious juvenile race – by more than four lengths at a sloppy Belmont in October.

Greenpointcrusader was seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, one place ahead of Conquest Big E (Mark Casse/Mike Smith).
