SILVESTRE DE SOUSA has been eased in the Flat jockeys title market after being given a 12-day ban by the BHA under its totting-up procedures.

An additional six days have been deferred for 42 days and would be triggered by any further disciplinary breach during that period – with the reigning champion now 4-7 (from 4-11) with Coral to secure back-to-back championships.

The ban runs from July 1-13 inclusive and rules De Sousa out of both the Coral-Eclipse meeting and Newmarket’s Moet & Chandon July Festival.

Lingfield stewards sent the file to the BHA’s High Holborn headquarters following De Sousa’s ride aboard Swiss Cross on June 16, which they deemed to be in contravention of the whip rules, a fifth such offence committed by the champion jockey in the last six months.

Three of De Sousa’s recent bans were of the most minor on the scale and incurred two day suspensions, while two were not for exessive use of the whip.

Ryan Moore is now 7-4 (from 3) with the same firm to be crowned champion jockey this campaign, while Andrea Atzeni is 7-1.
