LE ROMAIN scored a surprise victory in Saturday’s Group 1 Randwick Guineas, getting the better of the odds-on favourite Press Statement.

Settled in midfield by jockey Christian Reith, Le Romain moved up to challenge three wide around the turn for home, keeping Press Statement boxed in to his inside.

Le Romain hit the front with a furlong to run as Press Statement finally found room to deliver a late charge. It was too late though, as Le Romain dug deep to hold on and score by a short neck.

“It was a thrill,” said trainer Kris Lees. “He has just kept handling every step that we have put in front of him.

“He has raised the bar every time, didn’t have a great run again but he got cover and Christian was able to make his move at a vital stage.

“Our bloke fought hard and it was a good, solid win.”

Just like in New South Wales, there was a surprise result in the Australian Guineas in Victoria on Saturday as Palentino scored for Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir and jockey Mark Zahra.

The story of the race unfolded inside the final furlong as a swarm of late-closers stormed home down the centre of the Flemington straight.

In the end, it was Palentino who held on by a nose from Tarzino, with Risque half a length further away in third.

Much of the pre-race hype had surrounded Xtravagant, the runaway winner of last year’s Group 1 New Zealand 2,000 Guineas but the colt could manage only eighth.

Randwick: Canterbury Stakes (Group 1) 6 1/2f, 3yo+

Godolphin’s Holler made all to defeat his elders and win Saturday’s Canterbury Stakes at Randwick.

The three-year-old found the front early on, with the China Horse Club-owned First Seal in his slipstream on the rail.

First Seal momentarily looked like laying down a challenge but Holler found another gear entering the final furlong and cleared away to score by a length and a quarter.

“This is the result of a great plan that was well executed by both our Sydney and Melbourne stables,” said trainer John O’Shea.

“The team in Melbourne did a good job with him and sent him back to us in top condition.

“Since he’s been back in Sydney he’s thrived – we knew we were sending out a very fit horse.”
