Preview: USA, Saturday

Gulfstream Park: Fountain of Youth Stakes (Grade 2) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo

THE unbeaten Mohaymen (Kiaran McLaughlin/Junior Alvarado) strengthened his position at the head of Kentucky Derby betting with another powerful victory in the Fountain of Youth.

Sheikh Hamdan’s son of Tapit extended his unblemished record to five races – the last four of which have all come in Grade 2 company – with a dominant performance in this principal trial for the Florida Derby.

Sent off 2-5 favourite for the $400,000 contest, Mohaymen was caught wide at the first turn and then sat in third behind previously unbeaten pair Awesome Banner and Zulu.

Brought to challenge three wide on the far turn as front-running Awesome Banner faltered, Mohaymen mastered Coolmore’s Zulu in the stretch, drawing away to win by two and a quarter lengths in a final time of 1m42.84s.

Also on Saturday

Gulfstream Park: Davona Dale Stakes (Grade 2) 1m, dirt, 3yo fillies

After winning her three previous starts by a cumulative 34½ lengths, Kentucky Oaks hope Cathryn Sophia (John Servis/ Javier Castellano) continued in the same vein with another unimpeachable display.

Stretching out to a mile for the first time, the 1-5 favourite stalked the pace before taking command on the far turn and running right away to win by seven lengths.

“It’s crazy,” said trainer John Servis. “I’ve had some nice fillies over time, but to have a horse like Smarty Jones and to have a filly like this – it doesn’t happen, not for a guy from Parx. It’s very exciting – I think she’s just now coming into herself.”

Next stop is the Gulfstream Park Oaks on April 2.

Gulfstream Park: Gulfstream Park Sprint (Grade 3) 6½f, dirt, 4yo+

The Dubai Golden Shaheen is now on the agenda for X Y Jet (Jorge Navarro/Emisael Jaramillo), who, despite an awkward start, set red-hot fractions (21.84s, 43.92s) before holding on by a length and a quarter.

Gulfstream Park: Herecomesthebride Stakes (Grade 3) 1m½f, turf, 3yo fillies

In an accomplished performance, Breeders’ Cup winner Catch A Glimpse (Mark Casse/Florent Geroux) drew away for her fourth successive win.
