THIS may be one of the sport’s slowest racehorses. He is, however, undoubtedly the happiest.

There are some who believes horses do not enjoy racing, but such a view seems like pure piffle when you look at the adorable Barra Rotha, who this week passed the post before posing to camera and delivering the sort of beaming smile more commonly associated with Tom Cruise, Frankie Dettori or denture adhesive commercials.

Rarely can a horse have shown off as much in the way of gums and gnashers as the nine-year-old, whose cheery disposition was on show at Warwick, where under Philippa Gibbs he finished ninth in a charity race that raised £20,500 for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. 

Given Barra Rotha had been pulled up in his previous five starts, all of them over fences or hurdles, he was perhaps just pleased and proud to have got from start to finish under Gibbs, who said: “I was really happy with the way the race went – it seemed like Barry Rotha enjoyed it too.”
