Australia: A routine piece of work at the beach for trainer Brad Smith and his string took a dramatic turn when Rebel Rover spooked, got rid of his rider and swam out to sea.

The horse, who has a history of misbehaviour, managed to keep swimming for two hours before being rescued, and was estimated to have covered 11 kilometres in the water during the escapade.

The incident occured at Sandgate beach in Brisbane, and Rebel Rover’s bid for freedom in Moreton Bay led to a rescue operation involving the Brisbane Water Police and a volunteer marine rescue unit.

Marine rescue spokesman Glen Philip likened the capture of Rebel Rover to herding sheep, and said: “When we got to the horse he was in about four metres of water and he was swimming quite freely.

“Luckily we were able to manoeuvre our boat close to him and get a lasso around the top of his head which meant we could pull him nice and close to our boat and put a rope on his bridle.”

Once Rebel Rover had been returned to shallow waters, he was reunited with the jockey he had unshipped and was ridden out of the water.

However, he still had plenty of spark post-swim when headbutting one of his support team, knocking them unconscious and putting them in hospital.

Smith was impressed by Rebel Rover’s endurance, and said: “Any other horse, 20 minutes would probably see them out, but this horse, he must have a pretty amazing lung capacity.

“He’s a little bit tired and sore in the muscles because he was swimming for a hell of a long time, but he’s quite remarkable for what he’s been through.”

Smith added Rebel Rover’s owners had jokingly suggested the Melbourne Cup should be a target for a horse who has lung-bursting stamina.

He is due to return to the track next month, having only recently made a comeback after being banned for playing up in the stalls.
