Giants Insider: McAdoo says Eli will 'take another jump'

Giants quarterback Eli Manning is coming off a solid season, and new coach Ben McAdoo thinks he’s not done getting better.

Eli Manning is coming off perhaps his finest all-around season, a year in which he completed 62.6% of his passes for a career-high 35 touchdown passes and 4,436 yards (the second-highest total of his career).

And here’s the scary part: McAdoo thinks the quarterback just might be even better in 2016.

“I still think he’s going to take another jump,” McAdoo told reporters. “He really bought into the system and likes the controls that he has there . . . He knows what he likes now and it’s natural for him. He’s not thinking as much as he was the first year and the early part of last year. It comes a little more natural for him.”

The 2016 season will mark Manning’s third year in McAdoo’s West Coast system, and to McAdoo, there are fewer things that the signal-caller will need to tweak this offseason. McAdoo said Manning altered his “upper body routine” last year, and that had a “noticeable” impact on his play.

But he needs no such adjustments this offseason. And at age 35, the quarterback needs continuity in his routine.

“He’s no spring chicken so he knows what he needs to do to get ready,” McAdoo said of Manning. “The only thing I asked him not to do was don’t mess with that throwing motion because his throwing motion is pretty flawless.”

After bouncing from right tackle to left guard and even making several cameos at left tackle during the first three seasons of his NFL career, Justin Pugh should settle in at left guard this season.

At least that’s what McAdoo is hoping. Pugh, the Giants’ 2013 first-round pick, has long seen his versatility milked by a club with injuries all over the line, but McAdoo indicated such treatment is unfair to the young lineman.

“We’re going to look at things and if we need to make adjustments, we’ll make adjustments,” McAdoo told reporters. “But you’d hate to keep moving Justin. Give him a chance to grow at one spot.”

McAdoo mentioned defensive tackle Jay Bromley, receiver Geremy Davis and running back Andre Williams as players who could “make a jump” for the Giants this season. “A lot of guys are giving up on Andre,” he said. “Don’t give up on Andre.”

The Giants have no plans to rush Cruz back into action. Cruz has not played since he suffered a serious right knee injury in October 2014. His return was cut short without a single full practice last year, when he suffered a right calf injury that required surgery.

“What we need to do with Victor is we need to be smart,” McAdoo said. “I think his knee feels pretty good and he’s just rehabbing the calf and when he’s ready to go we’ll put him out there.”
