Ben McAdoo appears to be the top in-house candidate to replace Tom Coughlin.

With Tom Coughlin now officially gone, here’s a look at who is on the Giants’ shortlist to replace him:

Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo (Interviewed on Tuesday, Jan. 5)

It might be tough to sell fans on replacing a legendary coach with one of his assistants, but Eli Manning has made it clear he endorses the idea. The Giants also would prefer to stay in-house, and John Mara has told people he views McAdoo as a future head coach.

Where he might end up: The Eagles interviewed him too, though it doesn’t appear he’s a leading candidate there. Giants might be his best shot. Could stay as someone’s offensive coordinator, too.

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo (Interviewed on Thursday, Jan. 7)

He’s got former head coaching experience (with the Rams) and plenty to prove, but his last two terms as defensive coordinator were disastrous. He’s one of Mara’s all-time favorite Giants assistants, but he has a lot of explaining to do first about the NFL’s worst defense.

Where he might end up: It’s Giants or bust for him, as far as a head coaching job goes this year.

Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin (Interviewed on Thursday, Jan. 7)

A bright defensive mind who became a rising star a year ago when the Lions had the NFL’s second-round defense. Without Ndamukong Suh, though, they slipped to 18th this year.

Hue Jackson goes 8-8 in his one season at head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Where he might end up: Has interviewed with the Dolphins, Browns and Giants, but doesn’t seem to be a top candidate with any of them.

Jaguars assistant head coach Doug Marrone (Interviewed on Saturday, Jan. 9)

The Bronx native was briefly a candidate for the Jets job last year after opting out of his contract with the Buffalo Bills. He had the Bills pointed in the right direction after resurrecting a dead Syracuse football program. He was also Sean Payton’s offensive coordinator in New Orleans from 2006-08.

Where he might end up: Browns, Dolphins, Giants and Eagles have all interviewed him. Giants might be his best chance, but keep an eye on the Browns.

Former Falcons coach Mike Smith (Interviewed scheduled for Monday, Jan. 11)

A close friend of Tom Coughlin, he went 66-46 in seven years with the Falcons and won 10-plus games and took them to the playoffs four times. His teams underachieved in the postseason, though, and he went 10-22 in his final two seasons.

Where he might end up: He also interviewed with the Dolphins. If the Giants don’t hire him, he’s expected to return to the defensive coordinator ranks.

Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott (No interview scheduled yet)

Lovie Smith took the Bears to the Super Bowl and was recently fired by the Bucs.

He’s a long-time Eagles assistant who is also a candidate there and comes with the strong recommendation of Panthers GM, and former Giants executive, Dave Gettleman. His Panthers defense have finished in the Top 10 in each of the last four years.

Where he might end up: He has interviews scheduled with the Bucs and Browns and drawn interest from other teams. Panthers playoff run could hinder his job search.

Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson (No interview scheduled yet)

Had one season as the Raiders’ head coach and went 8-8, which is pretty miraculous in Oakland. He spent the last two years earning rave reviews in Cincinnati for his work with quarterback Andy Dalton.

Where he might end up: A popular candidate, he’s drawn interest from the Browns, Titans, Dolphins, and 49ers. There are reports the 49ers could hire him after his interview on Sunday.

Former Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith (No interview scheduled yet)

He was shockingly fired by the Bucs late Wednesday night. Interviewed for the Giants job in 2004 and dazzled them with his interview. Was also pretty successful as head coach in Chicago.

Where he might end up: No reported interest after his shocking firing last week, but that figures to change soon.

OFF THE BOARD: Former Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase interviewed with the Giants (on Friday, Jan. 8), but on Saturday he was named the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
