FIVE-TIME Grade 1 winner Untapable, whose finest moment came when winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita in 2014, has been retired, owner Ron Winchell announced on Saturday.

Trained in America by Steve Asmussen, Untapable was the champion three-year-old filly in 2014 and earned connections £2,407,745 in a career which included nine wins.

The daughter of Tapit failed to register a success in three starts in 2016, however, and was a beaten odds-on favourite when finishing only fourth in the Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

“Untapable is officially being retired,” Winchell said. “After having a truly great three-year-old season and currently the number one US earner of Tapit – it’s time!”

Speaking to the Thoroughbred Daily News, Winchell added: “We were hoping for a little more this year, but it’s hard to be sad when you reflect back on her three-year-old campaign.

“She was a truly great one and I’m just honored to have been part of it.”
