RICHARD FAHEY believes there is “little to choose” between Ribchester and Galileo Gold and is raring to have another go at the Guineas winner in Sunday’s highly anticipated Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois at Deauville, for which both were declared on Friday.

Ribchester has half a length to find with Galileo Gold on their performances in the Sussex Stakes, in which the pair chased homeThe Gurkha in a thrilling three-way battle.

But that was a substantial improvement on his third placed effort behind Hugo Palmer’s stable star in the 2,000 Guineas in April, when the margin of defeat was three and a half lengths.

“It is great to be involved in these types of races where there are rematches,” said Fahey yesterday. “We are getting closer to Galileo Gold – we felt we would at Goodwood – and there is not a lot between them.”

Closely matched

The pair are as close in the betting as Fahey lets on, with Galileo Gold 2-1 (bet365/SkyBet) and Ribchester 5-2 with Paddy Power and Betfair.

Both colts will be arriving in Deauville ready to face a second Group 1 test in the space of 18 days but Fahey says the Marois is far from an afterthought for Ribchester, who posted an impressive win in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot between his two meetings with Galileo Gold.

“We are very happy with him,” said Fahey, who oversaw the Iffraaj colt’s final piece of work on Tuesday.

He added: “We always had it on the radar and we’re turning up. We were comfortable with doing both and he hasn’t had a tough time this year.”

Ribchester appears a much more mature customer than when playing up in the paddock at Maisons-Laffitte on his seasonal reappearance in the Prix Djebel in April, in which he was relegated from second to fifth after veering off a straight line.

Fahey said: “He just needed to get racing and while everything didn’t go according to plan in the Djebel, it had the desired effect.”
