BELARDO, champion two-year-old in 2014 but then winless last season, takes a drop in grade for his seasonal return in the Listed Betway Doncaster Mile Stakes (3.55) on Saturday.

The four-year-old, who won the Dewhurst at two, returned to form at Ascot on his final start last term when finishing three parts of a length behind Solow in the QEII Stakes on Champions Day, and Varian is hoping the Doncaster race can act as a springboard.

He said on his website: “I have been very pleased with Belardo’s work. He looks to have conditions in his favour.

“He proved when winning the Dewhurst and and again when second to Solow that he is a very talented colt and we have faith that he is capable of performing at the highest level again.”

Breaking new ground

Also on the Doncaster card will be Create A Dream for US trainer Wesley Ward in the Brocklesby.

Ward has a fantastic record with his juveniles in Britain, but has campaigned them later in the season at Royal Ascot. The filly will be his first runner at Town Moor, and Frankie Dettori is delighted to be riding her.

The jockey has enjoyed success with Wesley Ward through Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Hootenanny in 2014 and speaking in his Ladbrokes blog Dettori said: “Hopefully we won’t encounter conditions too soft.

“She’s getting the allowance which will help us and I’m really excited to see how she goes.”
