Martin Dwyer: made his return from injury at Wolverhampton on Monday

MARTIN DWYER had his first ride since September at Wolverhampton on Monday when It’s A Stitch Up finished unplaced in the 1m1f handicap.

Dwyer suffered an unusual shoulder injury in a fall in Prague and has had to rely on nature’s healing powers since operating upon it was considered impractical.

The Derby-winning rider confirmed: “It was kind of a weird injury, as where the collarbone joins the sternum it came out at the socket and it kept coming in and out of the shoulder.

“An operation would have been too messy, and it would have required ligaments being removed from one of my legs. I would have been off for at least six months, so I was advised by Oaksey House to see a shoulder specialist in Wales called Geoff Graham, who has treated a lot of jump jockeys.

“He told me that if I kept it still it would heal itself, which fair play to him it did. It took two and a half months, but it was a much better option.”

Dwyer missed the first three months of 2014 with a neck injury following a fall at Southwell, and is overdue a clear run, but while he has been working hard on his fitness he acknowledges this is a difficult time of year to make a comeback, with rides generally in short supply.

He said: “I’ve done loads of work in the gym and been to Oaksey House every day for the last six weeks. It’s not a great time of year to be returning, but I’m just glad to be back.”
