DEFEATS for Fixe Le Kap and Voix Du Reve within 20 minutes on Saturday left the juvenile hurdling division muddier than ever with the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival less than four weeks away.

Fixe Le Kap had been a general second-favourite for the Triumph after two easy wins in Britain and was sent off at 1-4 in the Ray Gilpin Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle at Haydock. He led for much of the race, but was passed by Frodon at the last and despite rallying went down by three-quarters of a length.

Bookmakers reacted to the defeat by shunting Fixe Le Kap out to as big as 16-1 for the Triumph, having been around 6-1 before the race, and he has been replaced as second favourite for the race by Sceau Royal, who races for the same ownership duo of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.

After the race Fixe Le Kap’s rider David Bass said: “He was disappointing. The ground was heavy but it could have been worse and he´s won twice on soft.”

Gamble torpedoed

Voix Du Reve had been the subject of an ante-post gamble for the Triumph since being introduced to the betting at 50-1 earlier in the month. He was no bigger than 25-1 before making his debut for Willie Mullins in the Grade 3 Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle at Fairyhouse, for which he was sent off the 8-15 favourite.

Everything looked to be going to plan for Voix Du Reve, bar having to jink around faller Thywillbedone early on, but once let down after the last by Ruby Walsh he found little and in the end could only dead-heat for second with the fast-finishing Tocororo. Winner Newberry New was recording just his second hurdles win from seven runs.

Betting changes

Ivanovich Gorbatov, whose own Triumph ambitions were dented when he met with defeat at Leopardstown earlier this month, is now back into 7-2 favourite, while the Alan King-trained pair Sceau Royal (best-priced 9-1) and Gibralfaro (10s) also tightened up.

Fixe Le Kap’s conqueror Frodon is a general 25-1 chance for the Triumph with Voix Du Reve back out to around 50-1. Sean Bowen reported after Frodon’s win: “Paul [Nicholls] said he needed the run first time and had every chance today.

“He goes on better ground so it will probably be the Triumph Hurdle now.”
