OWNER-BREEDER Fiona Denniff paid tribute on Wednesday to Dubai Hills – one of the stalwarts of the all-weather scene in recent seasons – who suffered a fatal leg injury at Southwell on Tuesday in what connections had already considered might be his final start.

The ten-year-old son of Dubai Destination recorded seven of his ten successes at Southwell, including a four-timer during the winter of 2010-11, and reached a lifetime high Racing Post Rating of 106 in December 2013.

“I never allowed him to run in a claimer or a seller,” said Denniff. “He had been such a good horse that I would never let him traipse round in a low-grade race. The girl who looked after him and rode him every day at David O’Meara’s, Diana, had been saying how well he was.”

Denniff originally sold Dubai Hills as a yearling to Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed before buying him back in training with Bryan Smart at the end of his three-year-old season.

‘What happened has broken my heart’

“Throughout his life he was capable of running a bad race followed by a good one,” she said. “He tended to look after himself and he was a very sound horse. We decided yesterday that if he wasn’t in love with the game I would take him home. I had his retirement planned out and he would have gone to Retraining of Racehorses. What happened has broken my heart.”

Describing Dubai Hills as “a family pet,” Denniff recalled the highlights of his career.

“He was third in the Lincoln in 2011 and he thought he had won it because he was in front on his side of the track,” she said. “Even when he racked up the four in a row at Southwell, there was a fifth one that I wouldn’t go for because I didn’t want to abuse him.”

With the loss of Dubai Hills still raw, the Denniffs do have the imminent arrival of his half-brother or -sister to look forward to.

“His dam is in foal to Bated Breath and, coincidentally, she waxed up today, which means she is close to foaling,” said Denniff.
