Nicholls paid tribute to his staff after his yard was hit by a flash flood

STAFF at Paul Nicholls’ Ditcheat yard were left with a mammoth clean-up job on Sunday morning after a flash food hit the Somerset trainer’s stables.

A total of 15 horses had to be moved out of their stables on Saturday night as the flood waters continued to rise.

Nicholls reported the water to have receded by Sunday morning and paid tribute to his staff, who he said had responded well in nightmare conditions.

“It was a great effort by the staff,” he said. “It was very wet down here, I think Somerset had about 14 flood warnings out and you’ve never seen water like it.

“We must have had about 4ft of water in the yard and we had to move out 15 horses and find them somewhere else to go but it’s all gone this morning.”

All horses safe and well

The 15 displaced horses were in the process of being returned to their stables on Sunday morning and Nicholls confirmed all were safe and well.

Nicholls said: “In some of the stables, it was literally 3ft deep, we’ve never had anything like it before, so we just moved some horses out to different places around the village.

“It’s just been a big clear up this morning, getting rid of all the wet bedding, replacing them and getting the horses back

“It was a bit of a nightmare but it’s just one of those things. The rain was just unbelievable. We were driving back from Sandown and it was just raining more and more and more.”
