Coughlin still uses Giants' gym, McAdoo says 'it's great'

Tom Coughlin can’t seem to let go of the Giants.

Tom Coughlin isn’t leaving the Giants practice facility anytime soon.

No, the ex-Giants coach hasn’t accepted the front office job that owner John Mara suggested back in January. But the new Giants coach, Ben McAdoo, said Wednesday that he doesn’t mind having Coughlin around.

“It’s great,” McAdoo told reporters. “Tom’s a phenomenal resource, and he was a mentor of mine. Any time that I can use him, I’m going to use him.”

MCADOO: COUGHLIN AND I ARE STILL PALS

Welcome to the latest twist in Coughlin’s strange divorce from the franchise he led to two Super Bowls. Ever since stepping down in January following a third straight losing season, Coughlin, who turns 70 in August, has continued to be a regular at the club’s East Rutherford practice compound, working out in the practice gym.

He was in the running for two head coaching positions — the Eagles and 49ers jobs — this offseason, before pulling out of both job hunts and, apparently, taking up residence at his old digs. Coughlin’s family, of course, lives in the New Jersey area.

It’s a situation that could easily create a headache for McAdoo, who spent two seasons as Coughlin’s offensive coordinator, and it could muddy the leadership waters for a franchise that’s fighting to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

Coughlin was — and remains — almost universally revered by current and former Giants player, so much so that a great many attended his resignation press conference, with quarterback Eli Manning sitting in the second row on the verge of tears. McAdoo, meanwhile, has never served as a head coach at any level, and at 38 years old (just four years older than his franchise signal-caller), he must earn the respect of his players.

But he does not believe Coughlin will interfere with that, he told reporters. In fact, he even hinted that Coughlin would still be in the building next month, when players return for the start of the offseason training program. And he doesn’t mind.

“No, I don’t have those concerns,” he told reporters. “As long as Tom’s around, we’re going to welcome and use him as a resource.”
