Torrey Smith and his wife, Chanel, endured a potentially scary diagnosis for their unborn son.

A pregnancy can simultaneously be one of the most thrilling and nerve-racking times any family experiences.

For 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith and his wife Chanel, they’re on the latter half of that spectrum.

The 27-year-old revealed in a blog post that complications with Chanel’s pregnancy sent them into a world of worry, searching Google for every bit of information they could find about Trisomy 18, or Edwards syndrome, a severe developmental condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome.

“I wasn’t really worried until I saw her facial expression and body language change,” Smith wrote of his wife’s reaction to a phone call from their doctor alerting them to the possible complication. “So I walked over to hear what she was talking about and I heard ‘1 in 25 chance of Trisomy.’ I just assumed she was talking about Down Syndrome and my response was, ‘Ok, cool.’ I was wrong. She was talking about Trisomy 18. I wasn’t familiar with it, so I began to Google it while she was explaining what it was all about. My heart dropped and my wife was in tears.”

Smith wrote that he “had no worries” because the odds were in their favor, first coming back at 24-to-1 before an additional test came back at 10-to-1.

He went on to explain the emotional rollercoaster the went on, consulting Google for every little thing — “that makes things worse. You start to think you are a doctor and it increases your anxiety and level of uncertainty with each click,” he wrote — and revealing that the thought of terminating the pregnancy entered his mind.

HOURS AFTER BROTHER’S DEATH, SMITH HAS GAME OF HIS LIFE

The Smiths know that Chanel is carrying a boy, and the risk of stillborn birth for boys with Trisomy 18 is higher than girls. The long-term prognosis for these children is not positive; fewer than 10 percent will reach their first birthday. Smith wrote that there were concerns for Chanel’s health that also weighed on them.

“I feared that I could lose both of them,” Smith wrote. “I also didn’t know how she could handle carrying a baby for months knowing what the ultimate outcome would be. Being selfish in that way made me think the only thing we could do is terminate the pregnancy. She still wasn’t sure and I would respect her decision either way.”

They were able to breathe a sigh of relief when their doctor told the Smiths that their son, Kameron, does not have Trisomy 18.

Smith stressed that the prospect of raising a child with disabilities wasn’t something he was fearful of, adding that they’re not out of the woods yet.

“Now we are praying that our little fighter continues to grow and we can meet him,” he wrote. “I’m praying for life, not for his health. A disability doesn’t make you unhealthy; it just means you may have different challenges. We all have challenges, and we are ready for ours that will soon come. Prayers Up for Kameron!”
